Why Homecoming Ticket Sales are Bad (And How to Improve Them)

As we head toward those months of September – November our company recognizes that the homecoming dance season is very important for us to get a great jump on the school year. Year after year we run into a schools that use the economy as the reason that their homecoming dance sales are low. After fielding many questions and working with a few schools I have found 5 keys that cause this issue.
1.No Student Love

Homecoming is during a time where the football team is playing, the school year is new, and there is still optimism for a fun year. Slow sales mean that your school has squelched those positive thoughts. It isn’t the recession. Kids don’t know anything about recessions, in fact kids still get stuff they want even when parents are struggling. Kids still spend money and will spend on something they feel is worthwhile. There is your issue. How to make your dance be a worthwhile cause for students to spend money. Do two things different this year. If you are making signs have people hand out personal invites as students leave the school for the day. A black and white copy print duplicated four times, and cut into squares is a cheap way to put info into the hands of your buyers. Don’t promise, show! Have the companies you want to work with come into your school and sell you on their services. Then have them do something to sell the students.
2.Doing Things Cheaply:

Nothing worse than a cheap DJ. Nothing worse than cheap decorations. Now you don’t have to book the largest hotel room just because but you do have to make the place look like it was worth the money. Stop paying for $500 DJs. Pay a person good money so they will care. If I was a $500 DJ there would be no way I would update my music for you, allow requests, or visit your school three times before the event. Remember paying a person minimally for their talent helps them make a living but paying them what they are worth allows them to make an experience for you.
3.The Sponsor is Behind the Times.

Nothing worse than trying to share a new product with people that have been doing the event at the school since the 90’s. Most of the time there is a rubber stamp that comes with planning an event. With the use of technology a DJ can take requests faster. We are an event photography company and we deliver more images than anyone and faster, why? Technology. If you are still getting the photography company that does presale or always has long lines, they are behind the times (this is where you check out our company Firefly Event Photography & Entertainment http://www.fireflyepe.com to see how we do modern photography). If your DJ doesn’t use subwoofers, and …well you get the picture. Move forward and find the companies that are delivering a more modern bang for the buck.
4.Your Committee Has Issues:

At times we get to experience the school dance committee that is creating the “us” dance. You know, they are planning the dance for the eight kids that are on the committee. Well, there are a large group of buyers that dislike those kids and will take their money to the food court over your dance. We take the time to visit the school and committee many times to make sure of ELE (everyone loving everyone). The committee is there to share the love not absorb it for themselves. Plan a dance that has something for everyone. At Firefly, our focus is all students and we only work with school committees that understand that. We had to start saying no to those committees that were making the dance all about their needs and wants without consideration for the entire group of attendees. Not saying you can please everyone but there are good ways to connect with all groups.
5.You are afraid to raise your ticket prices $15.

I try to give a quick business 101 and help schools understand that all the things kids buy cost money. Just check out the shoes and shirts they are wearing. Yeah, Nike may have an outlet but if that kid want the “new hotness” , it ain’t at the outlet. From my understanding the HC dance is designed at some schools to make money. Well, after you pay everyone you need to have some cash left. Start there, pay yourself first. How much do you want in the coffers after all of your hard work? In order to get the coffers up to that level you have to throw one hell of a show. Hell of a shows cost money but will deliver the best financial gain.

You have to go crazy and love throwing parties to make a real profit on these dances. It seems as if some schools have forgotten that these things are very important to the kids but kids are finicky. Deliver a dance where they get more bang for their buck and leave a sweaty mess from dancing all night and you will have a larger return group the next year.

Prom Photography for High Schools! Tips for Modern Times!

Prom Image by Firefly Event Photography

Modern Photography Companies Are the Best!

In the digital age photography has changed as the demand for capturing and posting have escalated. With that your prom photographer should change also. I have been to many recent weddings where the photography companies long ago ditched the slow, old, uncreative, rubberstamped ideas and methods of yester year. Why haven’t you done the same with your prom photographer? Shouldn’t your students have the best and most modern methods? There are three tips we share with our customers so they can check to see if they are delivering 2014 photography or 1990 photography.

#1: Is every student involved? You wouldn’t set up a snack machine at your prom where only the people that had the money could partake would you? Why? Because that would be terrible.

#2: Do they use a photography team! Find a company that can handle all the requests for images. Remember your students and what they like. If you give people value they will be willing to pay for it. This relates directly to how many images they can deliver. We always use a team of at least 3 photographers. Then we have assistants.

#3: What about the future? How will your students get their pictures in 10 years? Old method photo companies haven’t solved this issue. They get rid of images after a certain amount of time. I guess they never heard of #TBT (Throwback Thursday). Images should be available for at least 10 years.

#4: How fast is the turnaround? Kids want it now and fast. This isn’t the 90’s where we had no proof of how fast things could be delivered. If I can get a package delivered from California to Florida within 24 hours then photos should be delivered that fast also. We deliver by 9am the next morning. It is a push throughout the night? Sure but it is what separates us from the old guys.

Firefly Event Photography is high volume photography company that helps high school event sponsors add long term value to yearly dances, special events, and graduations.

Currently, professional photography for high schools lacks creativity, is costly, and includes a lengthy turnaround time. These issues have created a frustration from students, parents and sponsors that live in a world where photos are abundant and they don’t have to wait weeks to view and enjoy.

Our unique system and team of photographers provide multiple opportunities for every student to enjoy professional photography without excessive costs. By working with Firefly, our sponsors enjoy a worry free service knowing that the morning after the event their pictures will be ready to view, share and download for free, for life.

The reason I’m so committed to helping high schools is because I’m a former teacher, and I have witnessed the neglect by other photo companies toward schools that didn’t seem lucrative enough for them to show up to their events. I have also witnessed an almost hijacking of images unless the family was willing to pay a large sum of money for a product that didn’t improve even as the technology did.

But when schools bring in firefly, every student feels like the homecoming king, prom queen or the valedictorian.

Elements of the School Dance: The Food

“When in doubt, give ‘em Publix chocolate chip cookies!”

Light snacks, heavy food, beverages and a chocolate fountain, I have seen them all. My favorite? Pinwheels, man those are good. Homecoming dances usually draw a hungrier crowd than prom due to the meaning of the night. I know that kids won’t eat cookies all night something heavier may be needed. The food tends to round out the event. If you have worked a dance before you know kids will mow down some food. It’s always the smallest freshmen that are about to hit that growth spurt at the table packing it away. Mix it up, have plenty but don’t waste. Also having plenty of water is a must. Once that deejay gets crankin’ and those kids get to sweating you will need the hydration just from a safety perspective.

Q: Do you have plenty of water available?

Q: Is this an event where you need to go heavy or light with the food?

Q: Did you tell your purchasers what type of food will be there? You should so they know what to expect.

Firefly Event Photography & Entertainment, LLC believes that high school event photography should be creative, cost effective for all students and accessible for years. Our system helps every student feel like the homecoming king, prom queen and valedictorian.

Elements of the High School Dance: The Deejay

“Music has the power to bring people together. You want even more togetherness? Play Cupid Shuffle”

A deejay has the hardest job. It isn’t easy pleasing a crowd of kids. Yet, the best do it with an ease that is amazing. Find that person and respect their developed talent. Always hire a talented deejay. Anyone can play music and crossfade but a deejay worth good cash is an artist that your students will enjoy. Their portfolio of mixes should be available for you to hear. They should have recent samples also. There is nothing worse than a deejay that stops practicing because of too much work. Even professional athletes need an off season. Find the person that will be the centerpiece to your event and isn’t afraid to “rock the crowd.”

Q: Are you purchasing on cost, talent, or service?

Q: What is the date on their latest online sample?

Q: Are they willing to come in and connect with your committee so they can make the best decision?

What Passion Helped Me Create

My company FireflyEPE means a lot to me. It is my way of giving back to the industry that I care about the most. I really care that high schools are fun and memorable. Through the years I have heard and said many complaints about the education system. I have heard many students complain about events like prom and homecoming that took sponsor months to plan. I have been a complainer just like everyone else until I got involved. Now I know the work that goes into these events.

Firefly Event Photography & Entertainment forces me to put those complaints away and just do what I love to do. When I first started Firefly there were times when I would wish I was a doctor or a lawyer. You know, daydreaming that someone would look at and say “he accomplished something.” Well too bad world. I am a guy that loves to deliver great products to high school students and have fun while I do it.
My wishes for Firefly are simple.

•I want to deliver our product now and have those kids be on our website in 20 years thankful that our product existed in 2013.

•I want to connect with schools that see the value of what we are doing.

•I want to connect with students that are frustrated with the same old thing while the world around them continues to change and develop cool stuff.

•I want to make life easier for the event sponsors and planners.

•I want parents to be thankful that they can get their kid’s images without pulling out the wallet again and again.

I left my teaching position in 2012 so that I could positively affect more students. I have a personal challenge of helping 10,000 students a year. Because of that personal challenge, I couldn’t see myself sitting at another job and saying “see I told you things were bad in education.” I believe my passion for giving something great to high school students will continue to catch on and FireflyEPE will be the premier company in Florida delivering great event photography. Since I have developed the FireflyEPE system I have found the one thing that gets me excited about giving my all as much as teaching and coaching did. I love what I do and I will continue to work extra hard to deliver great things to high school students.
